She made it to the side door where she first came in and fumbled for her keys. The men on the second floor spent a few rounds shooting back, but there was no way they could hit the shooter from that distance even if they could see him. Not with the guns they were using. She eventually found the right key and slipped it into the lock. It was quiet again, but this wasnât over. The latch clicked and Kamila pushed through the door and ran up the stairs. It sounded like there was only one shooter, but who knew? Whoever it was, they got a good look at her.
She and the bikers would just have to leave, she thought, but the gunshots came from the direction of the road. Driving toward the shooter wasnât going to work, especially for the Jokers on their bikes with no cover. Down the hallway, she saw the silhouette of a man coming out of one of the rooms and she pulled her gun before giving a dry whistle. The man spun around and she lifted her gun until she heard the whistle in return.
âKamila?â It was Trapper.
âYeah, did you see where the shots were coming from?â she asked, when he was close.
âNo. Are you all right?â
âI think so,â she said. âI wasnât hit if thatâs what youâre asking.â When she could reach him, she threw her arms around him. She hated appearing weak...but she needed him.
âWeâve got to go,â he said. âWe donât know whoâs out there or how many, but we canât hit him from...â
âWe canât use the road,â she said.
âIs there any other way out of here?â he asked.
âNot if weâre taking the car and bikes. Weâll run into the swamps if we go in any direction other than the road.â
Trapper looked thoughtful and then said, âHis advantage right now is the distance. He gets closer and that advantage disappears. We could just wait him out.â
âLike you said, we donât know whoâs out there or how many. More importantly, we donât know why theyâre out there. I think we can scratch cops off the list. Far as I know, they donât use buildings as target practice. People, sure, but they like to be a lot closer.â Then it hit her. âWhich windows did he shoot out? I know the first one was right behind me, but after that...â
âThe dining room,â Trapper said. âAll the shattering glass was downstairs on that side.â
âWhy shoot out the windows unless theyâre planning on making an entrance?â
âIf weâre not using the road and weâre not taking the bikes and car, whatâs the best way out of here?â
âWe could go through the campground. Thereâs part of the swamp that runs through there, but itâs not deep.â She shuddered at the thought of what would be out there in the dark, but trying to stay focused she said, âUnless, do you think heâs trying to funnel us that way?â
âNo way to know, but if weâre not making a stand here, weâve got to get moving.
