She made it to the side door where she first came in and fumbled for her keys. The men on the second floor spent a few rounds shooting back, but there was no way they could hit the shooter from that distance even if they could see him. Not with the guns they were using. She eventually found the right key and slipped it into the lock. It was quiet again, but this wasn’t over. The latch clicked and Kamila pushed through the door and ran up the stairs. It sounded like there was only one shooter, but who knew? Whoever it was, they got a good look at her.

She and the bikers would just have to leave, she thought, but the gunshots came from the direction of the road. Driving toward the shooter wasn’t going to work, especially for the Jokers on their bikes with no cover. Down the hallway, she saw the silhouette of a man coming out of one of the rooms and she pulled her gun before giving a dry whistle. The man spun around and she lifted her gun until she heard the whistle in return.

“Kamila?” It was Trapper.

“Yeah, did you see where the shots were coming from?” she asked, when he was close.

“No. Are you all right?”

“I think so,” she said. “I wasn’t hit if that’s what you’re asking.” When she could reach him, she threw her arms around him. She hated appearing weak...but she needed him.

“We’ve got to go,” he said. “We don’t know who’s out there or how many, but we can’t hit him from...”

“We can’t use the road,” she said.

“Is there any other way out of here?” he asked.

“Not if we’re taking the car and bikes. We’ll run into the swamps if we go in any direction other than the road.”

Trapper looked thoughtful and then said, “His advantage right now is the distance. He gets closer and that advantage disappears. We could just wait him out.”

“Like you said, we don’t know who’s out there or how many. More importantly, we don’t know why they’re out there. I think we can scratch cops off the list. Far as I know, they don’t use buildings as target practice. People, sure, but they like to be a lot closer.” Then it hit her. “Which windows did he shoot out? I know the first one was right behind me, but after that...”

“The dining room,” Trapper said. “All the shattering glass was downstairs on that side.”

“Why shoot out the windows unless they’re planning on making an entrance?”

“If we’re not using the road and we’re not taking the bikes and car, what’s the best way out of here?”

“We could go through the campground. There’s part of the swamp that runs through there, but it’s not deep.” She shuddered at the thought of what would be out there in the dark, but trying to stay focused she said, “Unless, do you think he’s trying to funnel us that way?”

“No way to know, but if we’re not making a stand here, we’ve got to get moving.
