Chapter 5

“THAT SEEMS to be the last of my stuff,” Martin said a week later as he got ready to lug the final box out of his parents’ house. Or what had been their house, since they’d already accepted an offer on it. His mother wasn’t going to be leaving for a few weeks, but it seemed a little ridiculous for him to wait when he had a place of his own. Martin figured he needed to get used to living away from them. And with his things gone, his mom had more room to pack and organize.

“Okay, honey,” his mother called from his room, and a few seconds later the vacuum cleaner revved up. Martin shook his head. His mother was bound and determined to turn a spotless house over to the new owners. He was surprised she hadn’t thought about replacing the living room carpet because there were some spots on it. Heck, maybe she had. Martin wouldn’t put it past her. The vacuum stopped as Martin pulled open the front door. “Are you sure you boys don’t need anything?”

“I think we’re fine, Mom,” Martin told her gently.

“I just want to be sure. That Gary is a sweet kid, but the poor thing doesn’t seem to have two sticks to rub together.” She tsked softly. “What’s wrong with his family?” she muttered under her breath.

Martin kept quiet. Answering that question would open a whole kettle of fish, so Martin would just as soon keep quiet. He didn’t want to have that conversation with her… ever, if he could help it. So instead he shrugged. “You loaded us up with enough food and supplies to last us for months.”

Martin stepped closer and kissed her on the cheek. “We both appreciate it.” Then he left the house.

He reached his car and turned to look at the house that had been his home all his life. A part of him was sad to be leaving it behind, and another was thrilled at the chance to be on his own.

He somehow found a place for the box after moving a few things around and then got in. He took one more look at the house, and his mother came out and waved to him. Martin rolled down the window. “You and Gary come have dinner with your dad and me on Sunday,” she said in that way that brooked no argument. “That boy needs fattening up.”

“Okay, Mom, I’ll ask him if he wants to come,” Martin said, and she stepped back. He raised the window and waved before pulling away.

The drive to his new home took a few minutes. He parked behind Gary’s car in the driveway and got out, filled his arms with boxes, and headed to the front door. Gary was working an extra afternoon shift, so the place was empty. Martin carried everything to his room. The bed rested against the wall. He hadn’t bothered to put it together because since he’d brought it over three days ago, he’d slept with Gary every night.
