After quickly changing into something more fitting of a wanna-be queen, I entered the ballroom, which was also the throne room of the castle. There were about twenty demons standing in clusters several feet back from the dais where Val was already seated.

He stood and met me halfway, taking my arm and leading me to my throne. I never thought I'd be able to call it mine. Except now that I was older and a smidge wiser, I wasn't keen on having it. Mainly because it came with too much baggage and drama.

Kage, Amari, Nico, and Raphael stood behind the thrones. We were a united front if things went south. Not to mention our guards were spread around the perimeter of the room.

"I'm aware there have been a lot of changes lately. Including the unfortunate demise of the past council." I cleared my throat as everyone looked at Val. They turned their attention back to me after eyeing him. "It was necessary given their inability to protect the demons of Inferna and their ploy to have me imprisoned and eventually killed."

The surprise on their faces told me they hadn't known that small detail. I stood and paced in front of the thrones before turning to face them again.

"Inferna hasn't been right for a long time. It has always been about who was the most powerful demon in each village, but what about the heart and soul of the village? The people that make the village run?"

"What exactly are you suggesting?" One of the men crossed his arms over his chest and narrowed his eyes.

"There hasn't been a true monarch in centuries. Lilith ended any semblance of that. The council did nothing to protect us from her, just as they wanted to do nothing to protect us from the newest threat; my brother and his growing army." I sat back down. "I suggest each village votes for a representative and the council expands to represent all villages and groups of demons greater than twenty."

They all started talking at once, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Val stood, and they immediately went silent. "It's either going to be this way or Queen Samara and I will rule without a council. You are the most influential in your respective villages. I would hope that you embrace this decision."

"And if we refuse?"

Val rubbed a finger across his bottom lip. "You can refuse if you wish, but once your people hear of this plan, they will want to move forward with it."

Conversations started again, and I stood, moving next to Val. "That's enough. If you've treated your people well, I see no reason why they wouldn't choose you as their representative. Before we can even worry about putting together a council, we need to worry about our lives."

After much back and forth, most realized there was an imminent threat, especially since we had witnesses from the shifter village. They agreed to send as many soldiers as possible. Whether they accepted my plans for Inferna was still a big fat question mark.
