âGender-Nonconforming to Transgenderâ
Four of the children who were assigned male at birth and were first identified as gender-nonconforming now live and identify as girls. Parentsâ accounts of these transitions were divergent and not so clear-cut. In two of the cases, parents seemed certain about their childâs girl identification, as an authentic gender identity they had come to realize and recognize. Parents in the other two cases, however, exhibited a modicum of uncertainty about their childâs new status, precisely due to the challenges around nonbinary identities articulated earlier in this chapter. Here, I discuss one of each of such cases to capture these divergent parental impressions.
