CHASING DEER AND OTHER UNWANTED ANIMALS

If you have started your pup correctly, this should not become a problem. Preventing deer chasing is easier than breaking it and is a matter of training and breeding. Air-scenting dogs will be less likely to develop this problem, but all breeds can be taught to avoid it. First, if your pup is thoroughly obedience trained, you should be able to control it and stop unwanted behaviors more easily. Second, if your pup has had birds well engrained, this will help override other distractions. A dog that has birds on the brain will not be easily distracted from the task at hand, but if it is, you can punish it knowing you will not affect its bird drive. Third, be careful where you take your pup on its first hunts. Pick areas where you can readily keep your pup in view and control it more easily. Fourth, don’t be greedy. Killing birds is secondary to keeping your pup on track during this first season.

Deer chasing is a potentially deadly problem in a gun-dog pup. If it does occur, it needs to be dealt with immediately and severely. All pups will naturally chase running or flying game on sight. This is different from dropping their noses and scent-tracking, which is a real problem. If you catch your pup in a sight chase, discipline according to the game and situation. A sight chase and successful correction on the pup’s first hunt is sometimes the best thing that can happen. If the pup is allowed to sightchase, it will eventually start to associate scent and begin to scent-track. Do not allow this to happen! Most deer chasing is the product of an outof-control pup, away from the master and prone to investigate new and intriguing scents. Keeping your pup under control and in view until it has gained sufficient experience is vital to preventing deer chasing. If a problem develops despite your best efforts, you may want to consult a pro. E-collars are invaluable for breaking deer chasing and much more humane than older techniques.
