It is easy for any dog, particularly a dog this low to the ground, to pick items up from the ground in his mouth, something you want to watch out for and discourage.

Be careful of the plants and flowers in the areas to which your dog has access. Some are toxic to dogs, while others can cause irritations and allergies just as they would in humans.

Puppies have a tendency to eat just about anything. While you’re walking little Lucky, he’ll eat mulch (which can be toxic to dogs), dirt, leaves, dropped candy wrappers and chewing gum, among other nasty things. This will often lead to gastrointestinal upset, which in turn will make him vomit or have diarrhea. It can be even worse if he ingests something even more harmful. First of all, keep a constant watch on where Lucky’s little nose travels. Do not allow him to pick things up from the ground; if he does, remove the items from his mouth right away.

Should you notice gastrointestinal distress, take a stool sample to your veterinarian. A mild case of gastritis is easily treated by feeding a bland diet for a few days, such as boiled chicken or cottage cheese and rice. Once your pup is feeling better, gradually, over the course of several days, return him to his normal food. If you suspect he has ingested something harmful (antifreeze, chemicals, fertilizer, sharp objects, even toxic “people food” like chocolate, onions, nuts, grapes and raisins), contact your vet right away.
