Training Methods to Develop Strength and Power

Power, agility, speed, and quickness are among the most important abilities of successful athletes in most sports. Athletes have progressively become faster and more dynamic, reflecting increased skill levels and strength. As a result, the importance of strength and power for performance has shot to the forefront of training.

Since 1990, numerous studies have highlighted the important role strength training can play in the physical and emotional development of young athletes. Benefits include increased bone density, self-esteem, power, speed, and fat-free mass (Dahab and McCambridge, 2009; Behm et al., 2017; Radnor et al., 2017). Previous concerns regarding related injury and growth plate issues have been set aside; recent publications and scholarly studies clearly summarize the efficacy and benefits of strength training for young athletes (Behm et al., 2008; McCambridge and Stricker, 2008; Faigenbaum et al., 2009). In addition to improving performance, strength training decreases the chance of sport-related injury. It also creates a foundation for maintaining an active lifestyle and protecting against the onset of diseases as children mature (Rivier et al., 2017).
