Back

6.39 GOAL

The back is a two-beat diagonal gait in reverse. The left front and right hind lift, move backward, and land together, followed by the right front and left hind. Performed correctly, the horse’s body must be straight, the horse relaxed, and the neck low. If the horse’s head is raised, it tenses and hollows his back, making leg movement difficult. Veteran demonstrates ideal form and energy for the back.

6.40 SHOULDER POINT PRESSURE

When training a horse to back, face the horse and hold the halter rope about 4 inches (10 cm) from the halter with your left hand. Press your right fingers on the point of the horse’s shoulder. Here Ms. Antsy Pants has broken the diagonal pairs, turning the back into a four-beat gait. Although four-beat backing is used when a horse picks his way slowly and carefully through an obstacle, it is not a true back. Aim for a crisp, prompt, balanced two-beat back.
