2 The Batwa, known also as Konyi or Elgon Masai, live above the forest lines on Mount Elgon.

3 Thus northern Gisu make few distinctions among the southern Gisu, while recognizing the existence of a separate tribe between themselves and the Sebei. The southerners ignore the existence of this group, but emphasize their distinctiveness from north and central Gisu on the one hand and Vugusu on the other.

4 The Report was not published until 1957 (Uganda Government, 1957), but it had been signed as correct by the Land Tenure Committee of the District Council in 1945. During my period of field research its provisions were being administered by the courts as Gisu ‘customary law’.

5 Gisu refer to themselves as BaMasaba, the term ‘Gisu’ being strictly applicable only to the northern section of the people. Its use by the British Administration has given the term ‘Gisu’ official recognition as the tribal name. The use of the traditional name for the language was deliberate on the part of the Language Committee in order to indicate its relevance for the whole tribe and its concern with traditional values.

6 The dispute was finally solved, to the dissatisfaction of both parties, by making Mbale a neutral zone with its own administration.
