Chapter Twenty-Nine

“Come on, wake up,” I beg. “Open your eyes.”

It’s been back and forth for a while. Allesandro will wake up briefly, but then goes back to sleep. The doctor says it’s normal, the medication needs to flush out of his system completely, but I want to see him awake. She’s not as vocal as I am or nearly as urgent−her patience drives me insane−but she hasn’t left the damn room. I sense her distrust of me. It’s well warranted in some ways, but I never tried to kill him. I couldn’t.

“Fuck, there you are,” I whisper as Allesandro finally opens his eyes, and they’re clear of the drug haze. I can’t stop myself from grabbing his hand and squeezing it.

The doctor grabs the cup of ice that Benjamin kept refilling and brings a small spoonful to Allesandro. Despite just coming out of the coma, Allesandro’s face radiates disgust at needing assistance with such a simple task. He swallows several small spoonfuls before he’s able to speak up.

“Dr. Ranlen. Where’s Dr. Conti? What’s going on?” Allesandro asks, his voice rough with disuse.

“Dead,” Dr. Ranlen responds coldly. “You’ve been in a coma for quite a while. You are fine, though. Let me run through a few tests, and we’ll see what needs to happen next.”

Seems there’s a reason people refer to the God complex with doctors, I muse. Her savage tone indicates she won’t allow anything else from him. I watch quietly as she runs through the tests. Cognitively, he’s still sharp. I rejoice as much as I fear it. Physically, though...she was right. He’s lost muscle tone, and he’ll need to work hard to regain it.

“I’ll get Benjamin in here right away so you can start making a physical therapy plan. I don’t want you to rush it. Remember if you push too hard, you’ll set yourself back,” Dr. Ranlen warns. “I’ll return with Benjamin in a bit. I’ll let you both catch up first. Your phone is next to you with my number pulled up. Call me with anything. Ignacio will be with me as well.”

Allesandro’s eyes flash with confusion for a moment before settling into annoyance. As soon as Dr. Ranlen leaves he looks at me. I grab the cup of ice and offer him another spoonful, trying desperately to put off our discussion. He slowly raises his hand, and even though I can see it costs him, he manages to wave me away.

“What happened? What have I missed?” his gravelly voice demands.

“After our interaction with Alice, we were leaving when you were shot. You fell and hit your head. Dr. Conti managed to get you stable. Lio wasn’t going to have it any other way. You would have been proud of his...creativity when he threatened the doctor.” My body tenses as I mention Lio. “However, you have been in a coma since then. Not due to injury, though. I made an agreement with Dr. Conti to place you in a medically induced coma…”

I cringe at Allesandro’s furious reaction and have to take a moment to breathe before I continue.
