Chapter 17
Asher came to when something cool, refreshing, and wet splashed against his snout. At first, he thought maybe it was just a dream, and he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to preserve what few remnants of peaceful slumber he could.
Then he remembered that he hadnât been asleep, and bolted upright. He panted as his heart pounded against his chest, looking around frantically for the source of the errant wetness. He found it not too far away. Kowalski knelt beside him, a half-full cup of water in his hand.
Asher didnât even bother asking, he took the cup from the officerâs hands and held it up to his lips, gulping back the cool, refreshing fluid. The water felt miraculous against his dry throat and cracked, saurian lips. He gasped in relief when he was done, and met Kowalskiâs gaze to ask for more.
That was when he noticed the detective was scowling at him. Asher blinked in surprise, looking from the cup, to the cop, and back again. âWere you drinking that?â he asked, holding the cup out to the officer. âSorry.â
Kowalski took the cup and rose to his feet. As he did, Asher could see the barely conscious form of his dragon, sprawled out on the floor behind him. His eyes widened, and his mind raced with horror. Kowalski had seen his dragon. Kowalski knew that dragons existed. Was he going to have to kill the man hired to be his mentor?
He bit his lower lip. He didnât want to kill anybody ever again if he could avoid it.
This might be unavoidable, he realized.
Kowalski re-entered his field of view, the cup refilled and once again held up to Asher. This time, before handing the cup over, Kowalski shoved a pair of little white pills into the drakeâs outstretched palm.
âFor the headache,â Kowalski grunted.
Asher didnât know how Kowalski knew of his headache, but he didnât complain. He popped the pills into his mouth, then chased them with a gulp of water, sighing in relief. His head still felt like there were hammers pounding against it, but all would be better in another thirty minutes or so.
Asher handed the cup back to Kowalski, who again stood up and walked away. Asher blinked and tried not to look at his dragon, trying instead to focus on his surroundings. He was still in Stoneâs apartment, which was good; it meant nobody else had likely seen Esther.
âHow did you find me?â Asher grumbled, debating whether it was worth it to try and push himself up to a standing position. Maybe sitting was more feasible? With a wince of pain, he slowly crossed his legs and leaned forward, resting his chin on his fists. He blinked in surprise. Hadnât his wrist been broken or something?
He checked his left wrist, and sure enough, the swelling had died down. It still hurt when he touched it, but it wasnât nearly as bad off as he had initially assumed. Likely it was just bruised, maybe a fracture at worst.
âI dunno,
