BRITAINS’ BLITZKRIEG

The year was 1983 and Britains now decided that economic conditions were finally attractive enough to warrant a major incursion into the field of the new toy soldier. The mission statement for new releases could be categorised as:

• To provide series of toy soldiers that would not look out of place when displayed alongside original (vintage) Britains figures

• To produce series of toy soldiers that could be collected in their own right, for those younger collectors who had never owned pre-1966 figures

• To provide collectors with figures at a reasonable price

• To provide specific pieces and sets to represent a historical event that were complete with all the accessories necessary to form an attractive and instant display, requiring the buyer to do little more than remove the pieces from the box and place them in a display cabinet

• To provide a range of compatible figures and sets of subjects that had never been originally produced prior to the deletion of hollow-cast figures in 1966.

Britains’ British Regiments series was launched in 1983 and initially consisted of three sets: Dismounted Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards; Black Watch Highlanders; and Gordon Highlanders. Each set contained six figures, usually including an Officer and five other ranks. They were packaged in attractive red boxes with oval cellophane windows showcasing the figures within.
