Chapter Fifteen

I BURST INTO THE HOTEL suite, holding up the duct tape that was needed for the bottom of our shoes. I was a little out of breath and I could feel the hair I’d sat so long for slipping from its place. I put a hand up, smoothing back the little stray hairs that were coming loose from the French twist. Fortunately, the wispy hairs would make it look more natural.

“Got it,” I called out.

Rebecca and Morgan were both hovering over Alexus, who was sitting in a chair getting her makeup done. Their shoes were still in the boxes after Rebecca had nearly snapped her neck when she slid on the flat carpet. We realized immediately the new shoes combined with the satiny smooth carpet was a death trap. Alexus had nearly burst into a full anxiety attack until I remembered a trick I read in a magazine.

“Thank goodness,” Rebecca muttered. “Put extra on mine. I will die of embarrassment if I fall on my face in front of everyone.”

“It looks absolutely amazing out there,” I told Alexus. “You did a great job putting all this together. You could have a career in the wedding planning industry.”

“Did the flowers get set up right?” she asked, nerves making her sound breathless.

“Everything is perfect. I checked the wedding area and it is just stunning. It is exactly what you said you wanted. There is an arch and pretty fairy lights and it looks like a fairy garden. These guys really outdid themselves.”

“And the ballroom? Did they get the centerpieces right?”

“Perfect. Trust me, it is gorgeous. You are going to have the best wedding. Everything is as it should be. The caterers are running on schedule. I sampled some of the appetizers and they were perfect as well. It’s all good. All you have to do is sit back and relax. Don’t do anything except enjoy every minute of this day.”

She offered a small smile, her eyes meeting mine in the mirror. “Thank you. You have been an absolute godsend these last few days. I didn’t think I was nervous but then, it all hit. I’m getting married. Actually married. I feel like a grownup.”

All of us laughed. “You are definitely a grownup entering a new stage of life. I’m so happy for you.”

“Soon, it’s going to be you in this chair,” Rebecca commented.

“And she is going to look gorgeous as well,” Morgan said. “Her wedding is going to be a great place to meet eligible bachelors. Eligible sugar daddies.”

“I’m not getting married anytime soon. I’m not even thinking about a wedding. Today is all about Alexus.”

“You girls are the best friends a girl could want,” Alexus said.

“Don’t you dare cry!” Rebecca warned. “You will smear the makeup.”

“You said you used waterproof,” I reminded her. “You can’t expect her not to cry at her own wedding.”

“It is waterproof, but it isn’t going to hold up through tears now and tears at the wedding and reception. Save the tears.”

I shook my head. “You are so sweet,” I said sarcastically.
