In general by the turn of the century the Jacobin elements in the socialist movement had adopted Marx’s economistic view of capitalism and carried out specifically anti-capitalist revolutions that sought scientifically to rationalize capitalism’s anarchic production. Unquestionably there was strong appeal for any approach that could overcome depressions and recessions.

Jacobin–Bolshevik efforts at establishing a political society have one serious advantage over all their weaker predecessors: they claim to embody, precisely through dictatorship over needs, an all-embracing economic justification (based on substantive rationality) as against the blind type of capitalist economy which causes catastrophes. (Feher, Heller and Markus, 1983, p. 253)
