Trick watched as Rachel sashayed up the steps to her crumbling brick apartment building, her ass looking fine in that tight dress. Following her Uber driver home to see where she lived was enlightening. They may not be together anymore, but he needed to get her out of this dump immediately. He also needed to get her a car. Enough with the for-hire rides.

Declan's number flashed across his cell phone screen.

“Find him?” He wasn't in the mood for hello pleasantries. He chalked up his brevity to distraction.

Delcan's executive chair squeaked in the background. “Working on it. Got Nathan searching. No one's got a Jacob Anthony Grant on the books of any major petroleum company. If he's on an oil rig, it's not logged. Maybe an assumed name?”

“He's not that smart. I got his cell number. It's 703-555-4410.”

“Got it.”

With any luck, he'd never have to admit he’d swiped her phone from her employee locker and downloaded her contacts. He'd add it to the list of little white lies piling up like kindling waiting to be lit. Of course, Rachel also played a dangerous game—a game she thought so secret but was as transparent as glass. She could pretend she didn't have feelings for him, but tonight, that softening of her eyes, her body, showed she still cared for him despite her doubts about him. Getting her to admit such a thing? It was akin to turning water to whiskey.

“I'll give Max the number. He'll know what to do.”

He straightened in his seat, and not because he was watching a drug deal go down on the corner—two teenagers by the look of them. “Don't tell Max what Jay did. I'm not trying to get him killed.”

Declan huffed into the phone. “I'll tell him to let us know when he's found the man. He won't be touched. How's Rachel working out?” The man's casual tone had his radar on high alert.

“It's working. Already got Jackie hopping.” God love his friend. Declan had gone along with his plan. Now if he could only shake those old feelings that dropped like a bomb.

“Just be careful. From the little I have observed, her temper rivals The Sunset's.”

“You may be right. See you tomorrow, Declan.” He killed the call, biting back the question he'd wanted to ask for the last four months. What was up with him and Phoenix? Of course, there he sat at 3:00 a.m. outside his ex-fiancée’s apartment building, a woman who he had mixed feelings around now that she was back in his orbit.

If Jay had taken the money, then he had to be responsible for keeping her away from him. Might be too charitable a thought for her behavior, but at this point, anything was possible.

One thing was sure. He would not be played by her or anyone else anytime soon, no matter if he still cared for the Princess.

He debated whether or not he should spend the night in his car. A shady crowd had formed around her building, which only meant more drug deals going down.
