Many people had no choice but to travel through dirty floodwaters despite the risk of skin infections and other diseases.

Marty Bahamonde

August 31, Superdome, New Orleans

Marty Bahamonde kept in contact with various officials as he tried to keep the masses of people in the Superdome fed. Some portable military meals, called MREs, had arrived, but feeding people was still a struggle.

Bahamonde used his handheld device, a Blackberry, to send e-mails to Washington. In one message he wrote, “The situation is past critical … thousands gathering in the streets with no food or water. Hundreds still being rescued from homes.”

Bahamonde learned one piece of good news. Officials were planning to bring in buses to move people out of the Superdome. They would be taken to the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. But while he waited for the buses to arrive, people continued arriving at the Superdome, seeking help. To make matters worse, Bahamonde knew that the media were reporting stories about murders going on inside the stadium. The stories were not true, but there had been fights and some people had died from untreated illnesses. Bahamonde feared even more would die if they weren’t taken by medevac helicopters to hospitals that were still functioning.
