It was quiet aboard the Vulcan spacecraft; the only sound other than the low hum of the engines was the slow, steady drone of T'Sai's breathing. The cabin lights were dimmed to conserve power, giving the impression of night. Keridwen was staring glassy-eyed at the lights on her control panel when she had the brief sensation of a warm, almost feverish hand resting on her left shoulder. She looked over, her reaction dulled by fatigue, at Spock sitting in the pilot's chair across from her. He was studying her face with concern; yet, at this distance, it was impossible for him to have touched her. "You need rest, Dr. Llewellyn," he said gravely. "Perhaps you should lie down for a while." He was quite right; it had been hours since they had left Vulcan, and a full day since Keridwen had gotten any sleep. She smiled at his concern and his oddly endearing formality; she liked Leonard's Vulcan friend, in spite of her efforts to remain detached. "Perhaps I will take a break." Dwen got up and stretched, yawning as she glanced over her shoulder at T'Sai. The High Master, her stern ancient visage as cold and composed as a death mask, was still in deep trance; she had uttered no further commands for the past few hours. Dwen turned back to Spock and said conversationally, "If we continue on this heading, we'll be at Arcturus soon." "Yes." Spock glanced at his control panel. "I anticipate another seventeen-point-four minutes to landing." He entered a code into his control panel; the vessel began to slow for approach. "Unfortunately, being human, I can't get much of a nap in," she said regretfully, and peered up at the overhead viewscreen as the Arcturan system came into view. The natives of said system could hardly be termed linguistically creative; they had endowed their sun, their planet, and their single sprawling metropolis with a single name, which Standard, with its imperial tendency to ignore native terms if they were difficult to pronounce and to substitute its own ancient names for the stars, translated as Arcturus. And poor Leonard, if he was still alive, was down there somewhere in that sordid mess, in the clutches of an evil mind-lord. Dwen drew in a sudden breath. What if Leonard were being tortured? Dear gods, I can barely stand the thought of his dying ... please, not that. She squeezed her eyes shut at the mental vision of Leonard McCoy screaming, writhing in agony amid flames ... She blotted out the thought. Aloud, she said ruefully, "I've been to Arcturus once ... and had hoped never to have to come here again. The place lacks charm." Spock busied himself with his controls and did not answer. "One question," she said, walking over to stand behind Spock's right elbow. "When we do find this Zakal--what will we do with him? I mean, if he's so terrifically dangerous ..." Spock's expression was impenetrable. "T'Sai and I will deal with that."
