Kirk was aware that the sickbay's EMH, a Mark Two model less wayward than the version on the Heisenberg had been, was observing the drama unfolding in the hologram's limited world. It was as if his body were somehow floating above the Sovereign's main medical facility. He heard the EMH give a little cough, knew McCoy would be staring at the hologram, wondering why an EMH might need to clear its throat.
"Technically, she's not dead," the EMH said.
Kirk looked away from the body of his bride, to the EMH.
"She's in stasis," the hologram continued. "She can

safely remain in that state for months while a treatment is developed."
Kirk reached for the EMH like a shipwrecked sailor reaching out for his rescuer. He had questions. He needed more information. But McCoy inserted himself between Kirk and the simulated doctor.
"You're mistaken," McCoy said roughly. "Teilani's from Chal. Her genetic structure is an artificially engineered blending of Romulan and Klingon. The same genetic strength that gave her extended life makes her body resist medical procedures as vigorously as it resists disease and injury. She can last six days in the stasis field, maybe seven.
But then her body will have learned how to resist it, and . . ."
McCoy's voice trailed off, the rest of his sentence unnecessary.
Undeterred, the EMH tapped a finger against his cheek. "I'm accessing the main medical library ... accessing ... He brightened. "Chal' I have it. Yes, I understand ... but, Dr. McCoy, she was saved once before, by trannin leaves. The basis of the antivirogen you discovered."
McCoy turned to Kirk as if the EMH did not exist.
"Jim, I've spent two years having Starfleet Medical catalogue and test all the biotic material you brought back from the Borg recycling world.
I know what's there.
I know what the samples can and can't do. And none of them can reverse what's happened to Teilani."
Kirk was desperate for any chance to save his bride and child. "There has to be something in what I gave you that can save her."
"Jim, this isn't a disease or some physical affliction.
Her whole nervous system's been affected. The baby's, too, I'm afraid."

Kirk tried to make fists, but his too-new hands still couldn't close tightly enough. "You keep saying that, but you won't tell me how it's possible! Bones, I was watching her. She was just on the porch. She ... she was smiling. Laughing ... and then . . ."
"Jim, there are no environmental controls on Chal. It could have been so many things. An insect bite-" "I've lived on Chal for almost two years. No insect has this kind of bite."
"Not by itself. But combined with some food she might have had, the complications of her pregnancy with a human father ... There just hasn't been enough research done on the physiology of-" Kirk turned back to the gray chamber that held his life, suppressing even the possibility that his love for Teilani might have killed her. "There's nothing on Chal that can do this! I would have heard about it in the past two years.
