flowers. Some of us step on them. Sometimes
accidentally, sometimes on
purpose."
There was a silence. "Show me a flower," said the
beAt.
Kirk looked up at it, bemused, then said,
"Certainly." He got up, looked around the
clearing. It was not all the fine turf he had been
examining
earlier; there was some low shrubby growth dotted about
it here and there, and bright spots of color showed among
the branches. "Shall I bring one
over for you?" he said to the beAt.
"No need," said the creature. "Show me one."
Kirk got up and started walking over to the
shrubbery. That was when he got another surprise,
because the beAt went with him. It didn't move. But
at the same time, it was next to him with every step he
took, without disturbing a single leaf of t hat springy
bluegreen ground cover, or so much as a
crumb of dirt. It was a very impressive trick,
and Kirk wondered how in the world it did it.
Then again, they said the comAt's physicality was
"occasional." Is it
voluntary, I wonder? Do they turn it on and
off" at will? And how does it affect their
metabolism? He smiled to himself again. Now 1
understand why it made Bones so crazy when I called
him back up to the ship. I've got to find a way
to make it up to him later.
"Here," he said, pausing and kneeling down. The
bright bits of red in the bushes turned out to be
berries; but the turf had more than one kind of
plant in it, and Kirk reached down to touch a
small broadleaved plant, like a miniature
primrose, with delicate white orchid-like
petals. "That's what we would normally call a
flower. I'm not sure it's strictly analogous
