Chapter Eighteen

Dean was rapidly becoming my bestie, not that he replaced Wendi, but she also had school, her work as healer, and four mates. Which didn’t leave her a heck of a lot of girl time. And I got that, I really did. Our connection was still very strong, which was probably why she couldn’t heal me.

At least, I had no other idea why she couldn’t. She’d helped people with far more serious ailments and injuries. Tris and Samson had both nudged me—separately of course—to follow up with an orthopedist as the ER docs had suggested, but so far, I was holding firm. My leg was immobilized and probably healing, even if at human speed, and no way would I submit to some guy with a bunch of sharp tools to install screws and bolts and other Frankenstein-style items he wanted to implant in my body. As a shifter, even if nobody caught on to that interesting fact, I couldn’t see the procedure ending well.

Slapping a hand over my mouth, I suppressed the giggle that threatened to emerge at the image of a shift sending projectiles flying, getting stuck in trees, and bouncing off rocks while my friends ran away, waving their hands over their head in cartoon-like fashion.

“Christie? Are you all right?” Tris came into the room with a bowl of popcorn and paused, brow wrinkling in adorable confusion. “You look funny.”

“I’m fine.” If you called itchy and achy fine, but it wasn’t bad, really. “Just thinking about something silly.”

“Really?” He set the bowl on the coffee table then hesitated, as if unsure whether to sit by me on the sofa or take a chair. The problem was, you couldn’t see the TV well from the chairs. So I threw him a bone.

“Sit by me and let’s start the movie. I can’t believe you’ve never seen it.”

“Most movies about shifters are so cliché.”

“But Nicholson is always great and in Wolf? It’s a cult classic.” I patted the cushion next to me. “Sit down so we can watch.” I settled back, not wanting to freak him out anymore. He was with me more than Samson, seeming never to go to work or anything. How did I not know what people did for a living? Dean had told me, I was pretty sure, but I’d been so lost in my own head, I hadn’t absorbed the information. “I hope you like it. It’s a favorite of mine.”

He sat on the couch but first grabbed the popcorn and set it between us. “So you can reach it without hurting your leg.” I’d already taken a handful without any pain at all, but why push it?

“Thank you. It’s extra good. What did you put on it?” I hummed a little as I chewed.

“Parmesan. I thought you might feel like something extra good.” He grinned, hand closing over some of the goodies. “So let’s watch this flick from the past.”

I might have eaten extra fast to get rid of that bowl and the excuse for distance it presented, or I might not.
