Winning Environments
Shortly after returning to his desk, Justin can feel the obvious negativity around him. His coworkers are complaining about work, management, and anything and everything as long as there is someone to listen and agree. Justin, however, is tired of the negativity. Although he is naturally optimistic, the pessimistic attitudes of his coworkers are starting to wear him down. If they don’t want to be here, then why don’t they leave, he thinks. Justin is not going to let the negativity and pessimism get to him. Not today. So he pops his headphones in his ears to block out the chatter.
Before Justin can get settled, Matt, a coworker who sits across from Justin, comes to his desk and asks to speak with him. Justin locks his computer and the two of them head to the break room. Justin knows it must be serious because Matt mostly keeps to himself and rarely talks to anyone on the team, let alone him. Matt shares that he is thinking about quitting. He is fed up with the team’s dynamics and feels like he is just buying time until the inevitable happens—either he quits or gets fired.
Matt explains that although Sean had made some improvements and is more visible to the team, he is still not receiving the guidance and support he needs. Matt wants to know Justin’s secret. “You,” he begins, “seem to be adjusting just fine here, and I need to know how you have been able to last this long without completely losing your mind!” Justin listens but isn’t sure he can be much help. “I mean … ” Matt hesitates for a few seconds … “How have you managed to maintain a positive outlook?”
“Oh, that’s simple.”
“Really?” Matt says, thinking out loud.
Justin continues, “Both my mentor and coach have taught me several lessons about creating a winning environment. I am more than happy to share them with you.” Matt shrugs his shoulders and Justin begins.
