The autumn colours grew in brilliance as the season progressed. Dr. MacCallum’s annual “pageant of the north” was reaching its climax just as Arthur Lismer, Fred Varley, and their wives were met at the Canoe Lake station by Fraser’s wagon. The tamaracks had turned to a warm, bright gold, and the birch leaves were reaching an exciting shade of pale yellow. Now the ground was covered in yellow and orange leaves as well, giving the entire landscape a higher, lighter tone. This was contrasted by the lakes, which grew colder and turned dark blue.

Thomson and Jackson welcomed their friends with a picnic out behind Mowat Lodge, where the Lismers and Varleys had booked rooms. Maud Varley took a photograph of the party, including Esther Lismer and baby daughter Marjorie. Afterwards, as Thomson and Lismer went off to forage for some firewood, Lismer took him aside. “I have a message for you from Dr. MacCallum,” he said in his strong Yorkshire accent.

Thomson was stung, for he immediately knew what was coming. He felt his anger growing as he shot back, “Yes, and I’ll bet I know what it is! He said, ‘Don’t let that Jackson fellow influence him too much!’”
