The hours were ticking by without much progress, except now they knew the Charles River Killer’s methods had changed at some point in time. The why and how remained elusive.

The team had returned to the field office, where Agent Murphy and Detective King also waited. Murphy appeared standoffish as though he had been left behind.

“Looks like we’re all here,” Scarborough began. “Okay. We were able to convince the mayor to give us another forty-eight hours on the site before he reopens it for work.”

“How did you manage that?” Murphy folded his arms.

“It wasn’t that tough when you have the director of the FBI threaten to go higher up on the food chain if he didn’t cooperate. The mayor was terrified of losing funding.”

“Funding for what?” Murphy added.

“Anything. His favorite pet projects. Whatever it was, he didn’t want to lose any money. So that seemed to persuade him to talk to his union bosses.”

“Not to interrupt, but Reid and I have some interesting, if not valuable information.” Quinn turned his sights to her.

“Dr. Yang discovered the identity of yesterday’s victim. Apparently, there were dental records on file as well as a high-profile search for the victim at the time, leading to a lot of information regarding the young woman. Her name was Suzanne Gilstrom. She was a Harvard student.”

“Another college kid,” Duncan said.

“Exactly. But there’s something else. Cause of death was blunt force trauma, not strangulation as with the others. And she was pregnant at the time of her death, according to findings from Yang.”

“Oh God. And the baby?” Duncan asked.

“Removed. We don’t know what happened,” Kate replied. “But what this does is give us more insight into the Charles River Killer because we already know Victoria Slessinger, the professor, had children, according to the autopsy reports, but only one is living and she isn’t aware of any siblings.”

“What are you saying, Reid?” Fisher asked. “He was targeting pregnant women?”

Kate exchanged a glance with Quinn. “I don’t think so. Not initially, because the original investigation doesn’t call out any of the victims as being pregnant at the time of their deaths. They are consistent in cause of death. So, at some point, he changed. We don’t know when or why. Not yet. I know this is a little out in left field, but Duncan and I asked our office to pull up any adoption records to find out if Slessinger had ever given up a child for adoption. Because of the length of time that has passed and the fact that older records are harder to find, we’re still waiting. That said, Quinn and I believe there is some sort of connection between the Charles River Killer and this new copycat.”

“What kind of connection?” Walsh asked. “Aside from the fact that the copycat is, in my opinion, looking to cash in on his predecessor’s fame.”

“I don’t think that’s what this is. This copycat knew where the bodies were buried or else how would he have known where to bury his kills? And he took pieces of his victims.
