Theo followed Turin to the high wall. He looked out and saw three riders coming in his direction. “The one man can only be Kjell. The other is his oaf, Ulf, and the third is clearly Birgitta. What do they want here?” he asked Turin.
“I do not know, but I do think they are here to take something from us. Kjell noticed the riches in the chambers, I am certain, and his men were not idle while they were here. Many looked around the village to see if there was gold or anything to plunder.” Turin answered.
“And Birgitta? I thought we were rid of her. Where are Atticus and Lorens?” Theo asked.
Turin shrugged. “She wants you, Theo.” Turin answered.
“She and I are no more, Turin. I would ask that you find Yorick and bring him to the front of the house. We will rid ourselves of these interlopers.” Theo requested more than commanded of his friend. “Hide the children.” He added.
Turin nodded and ran down the stairs and into the house. Before he left the bailey, he shouted to Lalla. “Hide yourself and the others.” He pointed to the hiding place they had been found before. Lalla, who had become attached to Turin, nodded. She was a smart child and had learned their language quickly.
Lalla rounded up all the children and explained they were to hide again, like before. Bad men were coming to them and they should be quiet. The children complied and Lalla nodded, proud of the younger children for being brave.
Theo turned and left the high wall; returning to his chamber. “You need to hide.” He told Nanina who just sat and looked at Theo, not understanding him. “Oh, where is that priest?” he asked, running his hands harshly through his hair.
“Húð, kona—woman.” He said and opened a chest, motioning from her to the box. She shook her head; Nanina was too tall to fit in a chest. He pointed to under the bed and then to her. Nanina figured out what he meant, then. “Húð-hide.” She nodded and looked around. Then her eyes lit up and, without thinking, she grabbed Theo by the hand and ran from the chamber.
She went into the next chamber and began knocking on the walls. Theo looked at her, confused, then a small panel opened into the wall. His eyes opened wide. ‘Why did she not get hidden here when we attacked, instead of the dungeon?’ he wondered. She looked to him and smiled as she gestured into the small closet that was hidden behind a false panel.
Theo nodded and pushed her inside. He put his finger to his lips and she nodded. Then, without prompt, she reached forward, clasped his hand in hers and smiled at him before he shut the wall and left her in total darkness. Nanina sat on the floor of the hidden closet and waited, quietly.
Theo returned to his perch on the high wall just as Kjell and the others reached the outside short wall that ringed the village.
