Chapter Ten
Mateo
I wasnât the kind of guy who liked to be helpless.
Coach Bilson had been taken care of. The news of his arrest had gone far and wide. Not only was he found guilty of beating up Fred Arson, there were further charges brought against him by other schools.
The way The Society worked, I wasnât sure exactly which charges were real and which ones were fake. I knew Fredâs was of course real.
His father was happy with the arrest but apparently was now gunning for the school. That was the last I heard of Fred when the news broke.
There had been no other news about Alexander or the laptop. We hadnât even heard of anything to do with Chloe and her involvement.
Our fathers had given us strict instructions to stay home until they told us otherwise. We were currently locked up in Gideonâs home.
His dad hadnât shown for a few days.
After weâd been instructed to stay home, Dante and Sian had returned. He looked a lot happier after being alone with her for some time. Not that I could blame him.
I rarely got to spend any time with her, which was why I was now hunting the gardens for her. This was where I saw her disappear to.
What I had come to realize with Sian was she didnât like being locked up inside a big house, especially if she didnât have a choice in the matter. She loved to explore, to go out, and to not be kept on a short leash.
Even with the rain pouring down all around us, Sian had come out into the garden, no shoes, just a pair of jeans and a large shirt that was way too big for her.
I found her under a veranda past the first garden, going by the pond, toward a small alcove that had been structured to almost look like a fairy tale. The wooden veranda had been built with a roof, so it provided shelter from the rain.
One look at her though, and I saw she was cold.
After removing my jacket as I entered, I draped it over her shoulders.
âI donât want you to get cold,â Sian said.
âIâm fine. You need it more than I do.â
She sat on the floor with her feet out into the rain. âThank you,â she said.
I sat down beside her, trying to offer her my warmth. âDante looks happy.â
âHe is. I think. He didnât want to come back.â
Past experiences with Dante when he went on one of his soul-searching, art needs, he rarely wanted to return to the land of the living. This was no different.
âDid you?â I asked.
âYes and no.â
I didnât know if I should be relieved or not.
âWhy yes?â
âI missed you guys.â She nudged my shoulder. âKind of hard to believe a year ago, I would have done anything to avoid you, and now I miss you.â
This made me smile. âWe kind of grow on you.â
âI guess.â
âSo why no?â I asked, wishing to change the subject. Dwelling on the past would only spiral us down back to where it hurt too much, and that I didnât want to do.
