I reached up and stroked the fresh scrape in the center of my forehead. My poor body couldn’t catch a break. I couldn’t remember anything that happened after that impact until I woke up in the vault, but the scene before me painted enough of a picture.

A few more buildings on a path toward where the Cora got lodged were ravaged in a way these waves couldn’t be capable of. High, then low, alternating. We’d hit the water and bounced through them for nearly the entire length of the ruined city.

The Cora’s damage told the rest of the story. The ship’s stern had a hole straight through it. A missile of any type would've caused more collateral damage, but this was like a knife wound through and through, resulting from rail-gun fire, if I had to guess.

The ruptured wings were courtesy of Orvin panicking and overriding safeguards to flood the anti-gravs with a level of power only the main fusion engines required. We were just lucky the ship’s power core hadn’t overloaded as well. Probably thanks to an auto-shutdown safeguard.

The cryo-pods saved my and Alann’s lives, while Jimmy and his son? Judging by the way the building structure intersected with that of the command deck—which had been ripped apart and crunched—they'd either been pulverized or thrown out into the ocean. They’d never be found. The cost of vengeance.

“Poor boy,” I muttered.

“What was that, minho amigo?” Agostinho asked.

“Nothing…” I hung on the word. A drone zipped around the far side of the Cora. Its spotters shone down on the water below, scanners casting a web of thin light beams. A buffering sound ticked faintly, far above. I glanced up and thought I saw a tiny shadow flit across the night sky.

Someone was searching the wreckage for survivors.

“August, tell me the walls of that vault are thick enough to hide life-signals,” I said.

“I am not sure,” he said. “Hide from what?”

“Someone shot us down. Who do you think?”

“I’m not—”

“Get me back inside.”

The thought struck me to try and get back onboard and find Aria’s old necklace, but it was time to let go. I tugged on Agostinho’s sleeve, and we rushed back to the entry. I covered my mouth to keep from inhaling the cold air. It didn’t help much.

We reached the platform and Agostinho set the lift to descend. I plopped down against the rails to gather my breath. Bile rose in my throat, which I managed to keep down, barely. My mouth filled with saliva, continually forcing me to swallow. And between every agonizing pulse in my temples, I imagined Jimmy’s son crying for his life. Knowing it was the end…
