Summer

Summer had smiled until her cheeks hurt and danced with so many of Titan’s colleagues that she couldn’t tell them apart anymore.

But she had gotten no closer to her goal.

Harx Bruner had been her only chance, and she had stupidly rejected his offer to “slip away and get some air” together.

She wasn’t even sure why she hadn’t gone with him. He was polite, handsome, obviously doing well in his career, and he was a senior partner.

She could think of at least two ways that Bruner could get her to her goal.

But when he invited her out to the shadowy balcony, a warning shiver had gone down her spine and an image of Titan sprung suddenly to her mind, pervading her thoughts.

Titan doesn’t want to marry me, she tried to remind herself. But she still hadn’t been able to bring herself to go with Bruner.

Now she had danced her feet off, without any other opportunity presenting itself.

And there were so many guys all over her, that she couldn’t even sneak off and try to find those files on her own.

“I just had my hair mods done,” her current dance partner told her. “Got a huge bonus and I, just like, went for it.”

“Very nice,” she said, eyeing his bright, teal hair. To Summer it looked a lot more like toothpaste than she would have wanted her own hair to look, but to each his own.

“You don’t get it,” he told her, chuckling. “Look.”

He lifted his lapel and showed her the employee ID disc beneath. In the small picture, his hair was the regular straw color of the other genetic Arkadians.

“Very different,” she told him.

But her mind was spinning. Why hadn’t she thought of the ID discs before?

If she could get her hands on the right employee disc, she could probably get into the files. She wondered if maybe there were interns or assistants here who had access to the senior partners’ offices.

“You’re not a senior partner, are you?” she asked.

“Oh, no, way,” he replied. “That’s years away, or maybe never for me. I have no connections and to be honest, I don’t work that hard. I’d rather be partying. Besides, I make plenty of money already.”

Summer couldn’t help but compare that attitude with Titan’s. He wasn’t much older than this guy, but he was thoughtful, gentle, and cared about the future.

Her dance partner didn’t seem to notice that she was lost in her own world. He continued moving her around the dance floor, happily talking about himself. At least he wasn’t as grabby as some of the others had been.

“May I cut in?” a polite voice asked suddenly.

“Of course, sir,” her dance partner said, letting Summer go so fast she almost fell over.

Strong hands caught her and pulled her close.

For an instant she thought it was Titan, saving her from the onslaught of his insatiable colleagues.

But when she turned to face him, she saw it was Harx Bruner.

“We meet again,” Harx said, lifting one eyebrow.

“Hello,” she replied, smiling politely and trying not to show her disappointment.
