Tiny

Holding Sierra in his arms like this should have felt good, but with those tears and the heartbreak shining from her eyes, he wanted to drag Scrap back to apologize for every one of the tears he’d caused.

But he couldn’t. Not just because Scrap was underage, but also because those tears showed how much Sierra cared about a kid who wasn’t hers by blood. It made her who she was. That softness of hers appealed to him in a huge way. Seeing her cry gutted him, though.

If Scrap didn’t show up on Monday, Tiny knew he was gonna hunt that fucker down and drag him to Sierra’s kitchen table. If she cared this much after a simple conversation with the kid, God knew she’d be gutted if Scrap bailed and hurt her son.

Then again, maybe she’d channel that sadness and frustration into anger.

A timeout was called, and Tiny saw J.J. looking at him holding his mom.

He lowered his lips toward her ear. “You got it together, sweetness?”

She pulled back and swiped under her eyes. “Yes, I’m fine. It’s all fine.”

She tried to twist away, but he shook his head. “Don’t do that yet, J.J. was just watching us. I don’t want him to see you upset.”

Her body shook against his. “Honey, he’s used to it. I noticed he and Scrap nodded at each other no matter how slight it was. He’ll know that my puffy eyes have everything to do with his friend.”

“All right, darlin’.”

She faced forward and J.J.’s eyes darted between them. His gaze hardened, but a coach forced his attention back to the huddle.
