10 Dinners, Lessons, and Agents

We were awakened an hour or so after dark by one of Herr Jurgen’s multitudinous servants, this one a young blond girl named Fredericka, dimpled, full-busted, long- legged, who didn’t look to be over sixteen, but whose beauty must have made her the goal of every male under thirty in the neighborhood, and a good number over that age. Would her parents demand a high bride-price!

Mein Herr Jurgen, we were informed in halting if correct Anglisch, was expecting us for dinner, which was at eight of the clock sharp. The attire would be formal. She pointed out for us clothing that had been brought in while we slept.

When the girl departed I found, after a short search, that Tapferkeitenhaven, despite its antique appearance, was equipped with such amenities as indoor plumbing. After using the chrome and tile facilities, I returned to the sleeping room to find Von Heinen talking with a portly, middle- aged man in the black and orange livery of Herr Jurgen, who was to serve as our valet while we dressed in the proper clothing in the proper manner—which seemed like an odd occupation for a man with his flintlike eyes. And I wondered how it was possible for Herr Jurgen to keep any secrets with this number of people running loose. I figured that either they were awfully loyal or half of northern Sclavania would know of our presence by then.

While we dressed, the valet, whose name turned out to be Otto, kept up a running conversation, or more correctly monologue, since Von Heinen and I were hardly given a chance to speak during the time he was with us. He informed us, among other things, that Herr Jurgen always expected his dinner guests to be in proper attire. Rebel though he might be against some of the practices and religious positions of Emperor Conrad and his nobles, Herr Jurgen believed in keeping up the traditional standards.
