Valerie was very careful about how she approached this. “You can’t tell anyone,” she began nervously, although she wasn’t sure why she was so nervous. Kat had long since proven she had no problem with homosexuality. “And you have to let me tell Lindsay about your dad.”

“Secret-bartering?” Kat questioned, raising an eyebrow. “Is this one really worth telling her mine?”

“You’ll have to take that chance,” Valerie replied.

Kat sighed again. “Fine. Now tell me. Which guy at our school is she hooking up with?”

“None of them.” Valerie hesitated briefly, and then declared, “She likes girls.”

Kat’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. “No! Are you serious?”

Valerie nodded, unable to hide her amusement at Kat’s reaction. Then she winced as Kat hit her.

“How long have you known and not told me, you bitch?”

“I don’t know… since right around auditions for the play? Maybe a little bit before that? She made me promise to keep it a secret.”

“Wow. So Nick’s been kissing a lesbian. Ha! She’s really hot, though.” Kat looked thoughtful. “I think I just got a little bicurious.”

Valerie felt a small flicker of jealousy flare up within her, and before she could stop herself, she replied, “Lindsay wouldn’t be into that.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I know she doesn’t like experiments with straight girls.” Valerie realized now, as Kat studied her intently, why she’d been so nervous about revealing Lindsay’s secret. It wasn’t a far jump to something Valerie absolutely did not want to get out, and right before her very eyes, the wheels turned in Kat’s head and she made the jump.

“So you guys have spent a lot of time together since Lindsay got here, huh?” Kat asked carefully.

“Shut up,” Valerie mumbled, mortified when she felt her cheeks getting warm. That only made them flush harder, and Kat sat with her in silence for a long moment, then reached over and took her hand, simply squeezing it once and then holding it.

“It’s okay,” Kat finally told her. Valerie pulled her hand away and used both hands to hide her face as she shook her head. She felt Kat’s palm on her back a moment later, rubbing back and forth. “Val…”

She was overwhelmed. With Lindsay, she’d felt like they were in some sort of safe bubble together, and she could do what she wanted and figure herself out safely and with no judgment. Now that Kat knew, it made it all real, and no longer safe. People were going to find out, and they were going to talk about her. She knew she wasn’t ready for that.

“I won’t tell anyone,” Kat said suddenly, almost as if she could read Valerie’s mind. “Not even Nick. We’ll blackmail each other, all three of us. If I spill about you and Lindsay being together, you guys can both tell everyone about my dad. And vice-versa.”

“We’re not together,” Valerie couldn’t help but mumble. She wiped a few stray tears from her cheeks and sat up, sniffling while Kat’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“But I thought…”

“We’ve come close, sort of,” Valerie replied, shrugging.
