Chapter 12

Dean headed to the facility the next morning at

eight. Though the rodeo event began early

tomorrow, he was not scheduled to ride the rough

stock competition until Sunday night, giving him

two more days to heal. With the medication and the

shots, he was no longer in pain. He parked his rig

and adjusted his hat as he glanced up at the sky. It

was a mixture of blue and white, fast moving

clouds in the wind.

His plan was to begin the day with his

administrative work, and then get to his various

therapies. Once inside the building Dean headed to

the board member’s area and opened the door of

his private office. He took off his coat and hat,

staring at his desk with its pile of paperwork. On

top were several notices for the event and

announcements of changes to the scheduling. He sat

behind his desk and began reading through them,

hoping no one had altered the day of the rough

stock events. He stopped short and read an internal

bulletin. Rob Grafton and Victor Sarita had been

hired to help the management staff.

Seeing it was signed by Ralph Greywolf, Dean

placed the paperwork on the table and rubbed his

face. “You takin’ over already, Wolcott?” Dean

wasn’t happy Clint had managed to get his posse

around him. He also wasn’t pleased the decision

hadn’t gone up for a debate or vote by the board.

He had no idea if Cheyenne and Ralph had known

each other previous to meeting at this league, but

Dean could feel a shift in power and it seemed

there was nothing he could do about it.

Clint had a break before he began his training

and would be given tomorrow off to allow his

body to recuperate for the rough stock events on

Sunday.

Meanwhile, Cheyenne was riding his speed

event with Geronimo, sprinting around barrels as

his coach kept track of his time.

A hand rested on Clint’s shoulder. He looked up

and spotted Rob’s smile. “Howdy,” Clint said.

“Heya, big boy. Look at our Shy. Isn’t he

amazing?” Rob leaned against the rail Clint was

resting on, Victor moving to the opposite side of

Clint.

“He is. He’s a winner. An’ I know, Shy. He

ain’t even givin’ it his all.”

“He will be tomorrow,” Victor said.

“You come in to work?” Clint asked.

“To sign.” Rob stared at Cheyenne as he walked

Geronimo to the trainer. “Ralph has our contracts

to look over and said he’d give me and Victor a

nice office to share.”

“Okay.” Clint nodded, content. He felt his phone

vibrate. He took it out of his pocket and read a text

from his coach. “I gotta run. See you boys later?”

“Looks like it.” Victor smiled. “Thanks, Clint,

for your help getting us work here.”

“I didn’t do nothin’. You boys were just what

they needed.” Clint kissed each on the cheek and

strutted off, feeling like a million bucks.

He adjusted his hat and stopped short as he

walked down the hall.

Dean was standing in his way.

Seeing he was not moving, Clint walked right up

to the big man, their hat brims close to touching.

“Git outta my way.”

Dean at first seemed surprised at the rudeness,

then his sneer appeared. “That ain’t very

neighborly of ya. How about you get out of my

way?” He crossed his arms.
