Susan woke alone. Early morning light came around the edges of the curtains and the room began to take on a grey shape. She stared at the ceiling, astonished at her encounter with Laura.

Laura hadn’t come back. Susan had heard Helen on the landing after she’d fled, but ignored her quiet request to come in. Laura texted later to say that Josh had passed out. She was in a taxi on the way home and she wanted to see her again this morning.

Susan could smell her. Her moisture had filled her mouth and nose and she could still taste her. The memory of Laura and feeling her lips around her own clitoris made her gasp, and she trembled with longing and arousal.

She sat up and swung her legs off the bed and shook her head. She tried to think how they could be together, but there were too many reasons and principles in the way. She buried her face in her hands. The smell of Laura was stronger as she breathed through her fingers that had enjoyed her the night before.

She could never have her again. Her stomach clenched with regret and her body ached, wanting to be touched and sealed against the perfect fit of Laura’s body. She stood up and put on her jogging pants, T-shirt and hooded top, and left the room, unable to face her feelings.

The staircase creaked under her feet. The house made no other sound. She looked down the hallway. The sitting room smelled of stale alcohol, from dregs of Champagne in abandoned glasses. She checked the kitchen, but there was no sign of Helen.

Susan stepped out of the front door into frosty air. The cold stopped her breath until she became used to the change and then she started into a jog. She squinted in the low sun and headed up the hill towards Hampstead Heath.
