There was no dancing for the rest of the afternoon, but we spent a long time talking as we tried all the different dishes that filled up the table between us.

With a happy and bubbly haze—courtesy of our drinks—we returned to the hotel as the day ended. Time felt different around her. Like I could not get enough of our conversations and her laughter.

‘I think I’m going to turn in early tonight,’ she said as we entered the suite.

‘I thought the same thing. That reminds me, I need to call housekeeping for some extra pillows and sheets.’

‘I thought…no wait, never mind.’ Savi started walking toward the bedroom door and then spun around to face me. ‘You don’t have to sleep on the couch. Besides, it seems way too short for you anyway.’

I tilted my head to the side in silent question.

‘Well, we’re both adults—and we’re friends—I don’t see why we can’t share the huge king-size bed.’

It wasn’t the first time she’d used that line, though it sounded like she tried to convince herself it was true.

‘Are you sure about that?’ I asked, warily. Maybe it was the drinks or spending too much time in the sun, but being near her was not a good idea.

‘We can divide it with pillows if you want,’ she said with a light laugh.

‘This sounds like a bad idea.’

‘What’s a bad idea is the sore neck and back you’re going to have in the morning, leaving you hunched over the boardroom table.’

‘Okay, we can try it tonight. Thank you, Savi.’ I wasn’t going to argue with her.

‘You’re welcome. I’m going to freshen up and get ready for bed.’

‘Take your time,’ I called after her.

She disappeared and shut the door behind her leaving me to call housekeeping and attempt to clear my mind before entering the bedroom. Savi was right, we were friends and both adults, we could share a bed and not make it weird. We’d be fully clothed. It was fine. So fine. Absolutely fine.

Even if I’d spent the better part of the afternoon trying not to reach out to touch her, to check if she was real and not just a figment of my dreams.

The door swung open and she was dressed in an oversized grey T-shirt with a faded logo of the band Q.U.I.E.T on the front.

‘Sorry, I did not think we would be sharing a space,’ she said, bashfully.

‘No worries.’ There were definitely worries.

I had to keep my eyes on her face.

‘I’m going to head to bed, long day. But you can come whenever you like, I’m quite a heavy sleeper.’ She smiled.

No. Not her face. That was also a bad idea.

‘Sure thing.’

‘Night, Ted.’

‘Goodnight.’

I was thinking of things I could do to pass the time. Maybe a late-night swim to cool off would do the trick. Or playing online chess. But I was exhausted. I knew these beds were like sleeping on a cloud.

It was like it beckoned me.

I changed into shorts and a T-shirt, and padded quietly into the bedroom when I’d suspected Savi had fallen asleep.
