The allied topic of riveting is equally, well – ‘riveting’ and justifies its own article, or manual; for practical modelling purposes the following points should be sufficient.

The number, diameter and pattern of rivets used to secure hull plates to the frames, and to each other, were governed by the specifications of the Classification Authority (‘Lloyd’s Rules’ etc.) for the size of vessel – as were the plates’ thicknesses and other scantlings.

The pattern of hull riveting commonly used on early iron vessels is logically known as a ‘zigzag’ but by the end of the nineteenth-century the ‘chain’ pattern (continuous row) was required for butt-joints and recommended for fore-and-aft edge-joints as the technique proved more reliable, symmetrical, and it achieves more rivets per join. Chain-rivet patterns may be single, double, treble or even more depending upon the vessel’s size and her specifications; the zigzag pattern of offset rows remained in use along the keel, stem and stern-post.

A very rough guide for rivet spacing is three and a half times their diameter for joints (butts and edges) and twice this spacing where they are attaching plates to the frames; the hull’s frames would typically be about twenty-four to thirty inches apart.
