Chapter 6
âââ
And so he stood between a precipice and I,
Wondering which way to go.
Micah rose from his sleep feeling more refreshed than he had since he first descended into this strange land of man and beast. He made a quick inspection of his body and found only torn and bloody clothing where phantom wounds had once marred his flesh. He sighed inwardly. There was no doubt in his mind that Edenâs watchful gaze had witnessed his miraculous healing, and he could no wax a tale grand enough to quell her fierce mind.
Micah swung his head to the left. The unexpected sight of morning fog hugging the dew-coated grass greeted him. The heat from the sun had not yet warmed the cold ground. Micah shivered, despite not really feeling the chill. A small thrumming of doubt grew into a warning drum. For a brief moment the fog thinned, allowing him a glimpse of barley. The drumming escalated. Micah dared to look right, expecting to see much of the same, but what he saw almost left him limp with relief. Eden was lying on her side with her back turned to him. An arm was draped protectively over the chest of a large dog, but it wasnât clear which of the two was doing the protecting. It took Micah a moment to realise the calico canine was in fact Mokoto, who was now looking over at him with an unblinking stare. The small puppy with overgrown ears had vanished, now replaced by a magnificent specimen. Micah did not know how Mokoto had grown so fast, but these were proving to be strange times, and it was true, their Father did work in mysterious ways.
Mokoto blew a plume of air through his nostrils. I see you, he was saying.
Micah inclined his head. I see you too, pup.
Micah dropped Mokotoâs unflinching gaze, finding it a little too disconcerting, and eyed their surroundings once more. A pattern in the grass, a network of lines and circles almost, snagged his attention. He got to his feet. The indentations were too numerous and far-reaching to have been created by Eden and Mokoto alone. Micah raised an eyebrow at the pup in question, but received nothing but a blank stare in return. There were definitely some underlying issues Micah was not yet aware of, but he also caught a hint of something alien in Mokotoâs eyes, something that did not belong on someone so young.
The dew had tried its best to hide the trails, meaning the tracks were laid some time before dawn, but Micah could read them as if they were made just moments ago. He picked out Edenâs light steps easily and walked over to them. Next to them were the carefully placed footings belonging to Mokoto. He even saw the route where they had managed to drag his body through the barley the day before. That wouldnât have been an easy featâno wonder Mokoto was looking less than pleased to see him right now.
As Micah
