Chapter Eleven

Ushering Nathan into the house, Rad settled him in the lounge chair with a small brandy, setting another for himself within easy reach. I'm going to need it when I tell him my news.

"There was something you wanted to see me about?" Nathan's soft question roused Rad from his daze.

Rad picked up his drink and let the burn of the brandy help bring him to the present moment. He locked his gaze with Nathan's. "I managed to make contact with Leander."

His hand halfway to his lips to take a drink of his own, Nathan froze, then set down the glass and stared wide-eyed at Rad. "What happened?"

"I don't know how, but I went through the mirror. I was with him. He was real, Nathan." Real, warm, alive. Rad tightened his grip on his glass, remembering how Leander had felt in his arms. I'm not telling anyone that Lea and I made love. It's too special.

"Have you made contact since?" Nathan's eyes glittered and he leaned forward.

"No." Rad growled, his frustration boiling over. "I've tried all day, and although I've managed to speak to Leander, and seen him briefly, it's like having a phone and TV set with interference. And the mirror itself is always solid. But I have at least managed to let him know we're trying to help him, and he knows about you and Shawn as well. He's very grateful to us all. But he's still trapped, and I'm still useless."

"May I see?"

A small smile curved Rad's lips. "Who could resist those puppy-dog eyes?"

Up in his bedroom, Rad sat on the edge of his bed as Nathan prowled around the mirror, just as Rad had so many times before.

"I feel like the mirror's tormenting me, Nathan." Rad clenched his fists. "We only have a couple of days and I can't seem to do anything for him."

Nathan ran a hand over the screwdrivers and hammer Rad had placed near the mirror. "You have some good ideas, son."

Rad nodded. "Thanks. If I can get back there, I'll remove the nails and loosen the window enough for Leander to escape. I can possibly even loosen the door fittings so that his Radleigh can get to him. At least, that's my plan. If only I can get back to Lea's time again."

"I wish I knew what to do, what to say, son." Nathan sat beside Rad on the bed. "We've never been this close to saving Leander before, but in some ways we're as far away as ever. We know what's going to happen, and I'm sure all of this is meant to help us save Leander in some way, but I have no idea how."

For a few moments both Rad and Nathan stared at the mirror, Rad willing it to do something other than reflect the room and sure the older man was wishing the same, but nothing changed.

After a few moments Nathan shook his head and sighed heavily. "Look, I have to get going." Nathan stood and hugged Rad tightly.
