“Alright, everyone get ready to get your hands dirty once more,” Diebler spoke into the two-way radio. He reduced speed as they neared three hundred yards of the dock. Of course, two of his people were already cleaning up on deck, while the other should’ve been down by the freezer. He watched the harbor lights, making sure no other ships were going to be in their way.

A slight pinging sound from the radar screen caught his attention. He glanced at it, seeing that a large object was near the boat. He looked out the window for any lights indicating another boat. There was nothing but black sea. He dismissed it as a whale, although he did find it strange one would be moving so close to port. However, it moved closer appearing to gain speed. No way would any whale come up like this. Not to a boat this size, he thought. It approached the vessel at a high speed, and Diebler reach out for the radio to warn the rest of the crew.

On deck, Joe and Piatt were wrapping up. They each wiped their hands clean as best they could of the fish guts and dirt. They had heard the captain’s message regarding entering the harbor, and Piatt griped about how it wasn’t necessary. They were outside and fully capable of seeing they were about to dock. Piatt opened the door that led to the hallway compartments below, about to call for Zach. It was at this moment the entire vessel suddenly shook. It was a heavy shake, and it nearly caused the men to lose their balance. Piatt grabbed onto the door to hold himself up while Joe grabbed the ladder that led up to the wheelhouse.

In the wheelhouse, Diebler hugged the helm. He had dropped the radio when the impact rocked the ship. He slowed the vessel to a stop and rushed out the door of the wheelhouse, looking down at Piatt and Joe.

“Holy shit, did you hit something Captain?” Piatt asked.

“Shine the spotlights out,” he ordered. “Something hit us.” Another impact caught them off guard. Diebler grabbed the structure’s railing, keeping himself from falling down to the deck. Piatt fell on his hands and knees while Joe managed to get to port. He grabbed a spotlight and beamed it into the water. It seemed to glimmer wherever he shined the light, however he could not see anything but sea. “Christ!” Diebler said. “Piatt! Check the starboard side.” He turned toward the rookie. “Joe! Anything?”

“No, sir!” the rookie answered. He continued scanning the light. After a few moments, Diebler decided it wasn’t worth figuring out. They were already really close to shore, which meant safety from whatever was ramming them. He turned on the lights in the wheelhouse when he went in. He grabbed the throttle to push the boat forward. He was going to put it at full throttle. It wasn’t the safest thing to do when entering port, but he wanted to get away from whatever was attacking them.
