8:4–12:25

Those who had been scattered began to proclaim the Good News wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to the town of Samaria and there proclaimed the Messiah to them. 6 Without exception, the crowds paid close attention to Philip, listening to his message and taking note of the miracles he performed. 7 Many people were freed from unclean spirits, which came out of them shrieking loudly. Many people who couldn’t move or couldn’t walk were healed. 8 The rejoicing in the town rose to a fever pitch.

9 A man named Simon had been practicing magic in the city, astonishing the people of Samaria. He claimed to be someone great, 10 and everyone, from prominent citizens to the lowly born, were paying attention to him and saying, “He is what is known as the Great Power of God.” 11 They paid attention to him because he had astonished them with magic for so long. 12 But they came to believe Philip as he preached the Good News of the kindom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, and both women and men were baptized. 13 Even Simon became a believer. He followed Philip everywhere, constantly amazed when he saw the miracles and great signs that took place.

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 The two went down to these people and prayed that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 She had not yet come down upon any of them, since they had only been baptized in the name of Jesus. 17 Upon arriving, the pair laid hands on the Samaritans and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of hands by the apostles, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power, too, so that anyone I lay hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 Peter replied, “May your money perish with you, for thinking that you can buy what God has given for nothing! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, for your heart isn’t right before God. 22 Repent of your wickedness and pray to our God, that you may still be forgiven for thinking as you did. 23 I can see that you are caught in the gall of bitterness and the bondage of iniquity.”

24 Simon replied, “Pray to our God for me yourselves, so that what you said may not happen to me.”

25 After they gave their testimony and proclaimed the word of Christ, they returned to Jerusalem and preached the Good News to many Samaritan villages.
