CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

“Hello Nate. What’s up?”

“I know you are on your way home. I was the one interfacing with you and your boss. I found a special lady interested in you and she wants to talk with you in private.”

“When?”

“Like right now on your way home from the airport.”

“Okay, am I close?”

“I’ll text it into your phone and then you hit the link. You’re welcome.”

“Thank you. Be in touch.”

“Megan. Hello.”

“Hello James.”

“I’m on my way back but I’m going to be a few hours late. I have a client to meet and then I’ll come right to see you.”

Silence.

“I can’t wait to hear about the sparring with the swords today.”

“And I cannot wait to tell you!”

“See you then.”

“Later.”

James found himself once again in Buckhead in the same week. He knew the area as a youth with a driver’s license. Yes. He used to cruise Buckhead searching for chicks on the weekends right after his senior year before he joined the police force, then later volunteered for the navy and became a member of the Special Forces. Seems like a long time ago but actually it was only sixteen years ago when he set out make his dreams come true. Sometimes he thought he was so busy he forgot to make time for himself. So here he was on a six month sabbatical. Because of his stature and accomplishments they didn’t want to lose him but saw that he needed a few months to sort things out. He’d lost both parents when he was overseas out on the high seas, if you will. That was his family, no one else existed. His boss tried to be his father at times, thus he said take this time I have it approved from the highest authority. Find yourself were his exact words. James didn’t know he needed finding, but he was enjoying his friendship with Megan and his extra time off. He was ready to call her his girlfriend, then again that might mean commitment. So be it.

He knocked on the door and he could hear the chimes ringing loudly throughout the first floor. This was a mansion with hedges and a circular drive centered by a large fountain spraying water on this afternoon in late June. He had no idea what this was all about but he was told to meet this woman that could maybe help him with Maria. That seemed far-fetched. But this month was on the crazier side of normalcy.

A gentleman answered the door.

“Please come in. We’ve been expecting you for a short while.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m Jesse, may I take your jacket?”

“Nice to meet you, I’m James. I’m good.”

“As you wish. Let me tell her you’re here.”

The butler retreated and before long he returned.

“Please follow me. She’s in her office.” The gentle butler named Jesse wore a white summer suit with similar colored shirt under topped with a bowtie. Quite mannerly, he had graying hair and wore eye glasses halfway down his nose. I believe the disposition with which he routed himself through the mansion gave him proper exercise in a day.
