THIRTY-TWO

Freya pulled into Lena’s driveway on two wheels. She threw the Jeep into park without stopping all the way, making the vehicle lurch, then ran to the front door.

“Mr. and Mrs. Reid!” she yelled while pounding on the door. The doorbell looked broken, the plastic button cracked, but she mashed it anyway. “Hello? This is Captain Sinclair from the Fawn Lake Police Department!”

Slow footsteps made her step back from the door. Her heart slammed out a dance in her chest, and she gasped for air.

Lena had to be here. She had to be okay.

“What’s the fire?” The man who opened the door moved slowly. He was bent, his back tight and painful, and he turned his face to look at her. “Is there a problem?”

“Mr. Reid?” Freya held out her hand. “I’m Captain Sinclair, looking for Lena Reid and her parents.”

The man frowned. “I’m sorry, young lady, but there isn’t anyone here by that name. I’m Roger Hargrave.”

Her heart sank, and she pulled her paper with Lena’s address from her pocket. “Isn’t this thirty-two Sugar Maple Way?”

He nodded. “Sure is. My wife and I bought the place a month ago.”

“From the Reids?”

“I don’t remember their name, but my wife would. She’s sleeping right now.” He peered at Freya. “She hasn’t been well.” A pause. “Do you need me to get her up?”

“No, I don’t want to wake her. But let me ask you one thing—do you remember the family you bought the house from having a daughter?”

“Oh, sure did. Cute little thing. Is that who you were calling for? Lisa?”

“Lena,” Freya corrected.

“Lisa. Lena. My memory isn’t as great as it used to be unfortunately. But yes, there was a little girl here.”

She pulled out the paper with the pictures of the little girls. “Do you recognize her in one of these photos?”

“That one.” The man stabbed his finger on Lena’s face. “Cute as a button, she was. We ended up making her bedroom into an office. Great natural light. Her mom told me Lena liked to sit by the windows and watch the birds. When she wasn’t kicking a soccer ball around, that is.”

Her heart sank. The list Mindy had given her had Lena on the soccer team, but Freya had hoped it was a mistake. “Thank you for your help.” She was thinking fast. “Hey, do you know if they left a forwarding address for any additional mail got missed in forwarding?

“Not with us, but maybe with the realtor? We both used Sadie Owens. You know who I’m talking about? Her office is right downtown.”

“I know exactly who you’re talking about,” Freya told him. “Thank you so much for your help; I’ll get out of your hair now.” She threw him a wave and hurried to her Jeep, calling Brad before she backed down the driveway.

“The school has the wrong address for Lena,” she said when he picked up. “But I’m going to swing by the realtor and see if she has a forwarding address. Please tell me Steffie was at home when you got there.
