Chapter Seventeen

Cin was still reeling from the night before. Her sudden and encompassing need to protect Adam and the high from surveillance pushed against each other, trying to get a hold of her thoughts. But she needed to focus, she needed to learn about herself. She had to know what she was capable of, and this book, the one from Sanjit, held more answers than she was willing to ask of anyone right now. Anyone besides her mom.

Cin was staring at the book when Adam knocked on her door and let himself into the room. She flipped the book closed and turned her attention to him. “What assignments do you want to work on today?” she asked cheerfully, though it sounded fake to her ears.

Adam smiled down at her. “I finished all the work last night while my dad slept. I’m actually good. I thought we could talk about this.” He lifted the book and flipped some of the pages. “Sanjit told me he gave you this, and you might need some help going through it.”

She smiled back at Adam, swallowing her own trepidation at diving into this wild world of magic she had denied for so long. “That would be really nice.”

He took a seat and flipped through to the section on depression. “This is where your powers are from. Or at least some of them.”

“What do you mean some of them?” Cin balked. “There’s more?”

Adam rocked back and forth. “There could be. Most people manifest the powers of their dominant disorder. Since your dominant disability is bipolar, you have the ability to manifest both sides of the disability.” Adam pointed to a paragraph in the book. “We know for a fact that you can create. You are at a minimum a weaver. That is a power that comes with depression, just how it appears for Ian.”

“I, on the other hand, have pretty severe ADHD, which manifests itself in whispering.” Adam flipped to earlier in the book and pointed to the section on ADHD. “I’m able to whisper into the world what I want from it, and for the most part, it listens. I’m not supposed to use my powers unless they are absolutely needed, but I could show you.”

Cin frowned. “Why wouldn’t you be allowed to use them?”

“They can be used to control people.”

Cin’s frown deepened. “How would you show me?”

“I can ask you to do something, something simple like picking up this book, and you would be forced to do it.” Adam shrugged. “It comes in handy with possessed people, which is why I think they keep me around.”

“Adam!”

“What?” he asked sheepishly.

“People don’t ‘keep you around.’ You’re a part of this coven.”

“This coven? Does that mean you are officially part of this coven?” Adam winked.

Cin shook her head and laughed. “I guess I am.” She turned back to the book. “When we finish looking at this, will you sit with me while I practice? Ian says I should be practicing every day.”

“I’ll make you a deal,” Adam said.
