ALTHOUGH SOUND WAVES HAD BEEN “RECORDED” IN ONE OR TWO CASES PREVIOUSLY WITH MARKINGS ON PAPER, NO MACHINERY EXISTED FOR THEIR PLAYBACK.

In the Scientific American offices, Edison removes the small crank handle from his pocket and attaches it to the phonograph. Cut into the tinfoil is a clever recording Edison has prepared especially for the editors. As the magazine will tell its readers, “The machine inquired as to our health, asked us how we liked the phonograph, informed us that it was very well, and bid us a cordial good night. These remarks were not only perfectly audible to ourselves, but to a dozen or more persons gathered around….”

The editors would be even more astonished if they knew Edison had done most of the work on this device in less than a week!
