UNSAFETY IN NUMBERS

When Shareholder Value Is All That Matters

Why do corporations feel the need to be so hard-hearted? More than that, why do they feel so justified in this stance? Why do perfectly decent people, who may be pillars of their communities, loving to their families, and exemplars of charitable giving, come to their offices and behave like the robber barons of old?

Well, along with the ebb and flow of political trends in the last hundred years—regulation and reform, followed by deregulation and the return of laissez-faire attitudes—a conceptual revolution took place beginning in the 1970s that, in some circles, gave intellectual respectability to behaviors that fly in the face of basic sanity and any respectable code of ethics. This conceptual revolution is far from over; we are still in its grip and confronting an epic societal struggle to coalesce around a higher set of shared values. Before we describe today’s crisis in detail, we’ll present some of the antecedents to the enshrining of shareholder value as the one and only measure of business success.
