MOVE Your Perspective

Developing a positive body image is an essential part of optimum wellness and Thriving, and it isn’t easy these days. Historically, it has been challenging for many people—probably the majority of Americans—to live up to societal standards and what is considered to be the ideal body of the times. For example, it’s difficult for women to grow up in a society that tells them their beauty is all that matters and then promotes a standard of beauty that is unachievable. But it’s also difficult for men; they’re told that their “masculinity” and their ability to be a “good man” rely on physical strength and appearance. We have, essentially, been bombarded from an early age with distorted images of what the ideal body looks like. So, instead of looking at the amazing things our body can do, and instead of focusing on keeping it in optimum health, we only look to our “media mirrors,” which tell us whether or not we are attractive enough and ignore our health.

Distorted body image (aka body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD) drives unhealthy behaviors ranging from eating disorders to excessive exercise, increased anxiety, and depression, regardless of whether a person is of normal weight or not. This distortion can be deceptive enough that it can skew and trick our body image to the degree that underweight or average-weight individuals may see themselves as overweight and overweight individuals may picture themselves at normal weight, perpetuating unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. The reality is that year after year, Americans continue to suffer from more and more diseases of lifestyle; and our body-image issues are a great place to start when it comes to learning how important movement is in our daily lives.
