‘I can garden,’ said Dad.

‘I’ve never seen you garden,’ I replied.

‘My great-grandad was a gardener,’ said Dad. ‘Gardens are in my genes.’

Thimble looked puzzled. He knew you could run, jump and skip in gardens, and couldn’t understand how this could happen in Dad’s jeans. But there was no time for explanations, as Dad was already marching home, not having one of those things he called new-fangled phones you carry around with you.
