Chapter Four

“Hi, girls,” Wendy called out once she walked into the gym room and the other girls greeted her in unison. Wendy had only been on the cheerleading team for a few weeks, but she had made a lot of new friends, and she got along well with the other cheerleaders.

“Hi Wendy,” Brandi, a girl recently accepted into their cheer squad, greeted her. “What’s in the bag?” Wendy was taken aback by her question, and she shivered a little because she was nervous that Brandi might have noticed something off with the bag.

“Stop shaking!” Black shouted and Wendy relaxed some.

“A change of shoes just in case I need it,” Wendy said, and the girl nodded in understanding.

“Good idea, I wish that I'd thought of that.” Brandi walked over to the middle of the gym and practiced her stretching with the other students. Wendy sat down on a bench furthest away from the other cheerleaders.

“Keep your ears open Black for anything suspicious.” Before Black could respond to her, Wendy turned towards the direction of a voice that called out her name. “Oh, how are you, Emily?” Wendy asked once she saw Emily, a girl in her chemistry class, walking up to her.

“I’m alright. I came for the cheerleader audition.” Wendy grinned. Wendy thought that the girl was a little too quiet and timid, and she believed that being a cheerleader would help the girl open up a bit more.

“That’s great. I’m not one of the judges, but I know you’ll do well.” Wendy always tried her best to encourage people to do the things that’ll make them happy.

“Thanks. I’ve been praying hard every day to do well. I know that I’ll be able to do it if I work hard and with a little luck on my side.” Black’s ears perked up at this, and he looked out of the box at the girl.

“She wants luck on her side,” Black said and tried his best to hide from the girl’s vision. She was a petite young girl with a short dark bob hairstyle. Her cheeks were rosy, and she looked delicate, but something smelled odd about the girl. She didn’t smell like the typical spray that girls spritz themselves with every morning.

She smelled like she was hiding something, something important to their case. “What are you hiding?” Wendy heard Black mumbling in the bag, and she would have asked him what he was saying if Emily wasn’t right there.

“You don’t need luck, Emily,” Wendy said and placed her hands on the smaller girl’s shoulders. “I’ve seen you practice, and I’m sure the judges will see potential in you.” Grief momentarily rushed over the girl’s delicate features, but a smile quickly followed.

“Thanks, Wendy, I’ll do my best.” The girl walked away then, and Wendy sat down on the bench next to Black.

“You’ve known that girl long?” Black asked and poked his mouth out of the bag. Wendy’s eyes scanned the room to make sure that nobody was paying attention to her.

“Not really,” she whispered and searched in her purse for her cell phone.
