BS

BS was born in 1944 and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She now lives in Washington County, Florida. She experienced abuse from her father at an early age and experienced a string of marriages to abusive men. She speaks animatedly, with laughter and tears, reflecting on a desire to be loved unconditionally.

BS

JR: Jan Rosenberg

Growing up

BS: In Ohio, Cleveland, Ohio in Valley View. Dad and Mom had me going to a school. When I was a bigger kid when we lived in Cleveland, Ohio we lived with my mom and my mother in-law, not my mother in-law but my dad’s mother. And I was approximately, me and my cousin, my dad and my mom, my grandmother, my aunt and my uncle lived in like one big house.

JR: Oh my goodness

BS: It was getting pretty congested there.

And I was born in 1944. December 29th, four days after Christmas.

JR: Wow, what a Christmas present.

BS: Um hum.

My mom was a ... there’s a picture of Mom and Dad on the wall there. JR: Uh huh, I saw it.

BS: And Mom and Dad. My dad was very very strict. I had real long hair, I can remember this. My sister and I, we both had long hair, and my grandmother that was owning the home at the time. My grandmother despised me having long hair, and she took me downstairs in the basement, put a bowl on my head and cut my hair to about that size.

JR: Oh my God, she cut it below your earlobe?

BS: Yeah. So I looked like a little Dutch boy.

JR: Uh hum, where’s your can of paint?

BS: That’s exactly right. And then after that this little girl started to change into a tom boy. ‘Cause if you want me to look like a boy? I don’t want to dress up. And I started being ... I’m not a rebellious little girl. Just a person all her own self. And sister and I we got along to a certain degree, but I was the first one born, and she was two years under me. And her name was Carol, and her name is Carol, she’s still very much alive. And Dad and Mom, my mother had to go to work at W.J. Schomberger’s, making these bombs. And I can remember a lot of things. Still today, which is really amazing....

JR: What was she making?

BS: Bombs in the war time.

JR: Oh, okay.

BS: [laughs at dog]

And Dad was a foreman at the W.J. Schomberger’s [ ] shift.... And Mom worked in the shop along with him. Doing all, I guess like piece-making things. Bombs.(laughs) That’s what I was told.

So Grandma watched us. And that’s where I had these real long, like I said, she had done my hair. So I became a child of, oh what would you want to call it? I was a good girl, real good little girl. I was sugar and spice and everything nice, but a tom boy on top of it. If that makes any sense to you.

JR: Uh huh

BS: And my grandma would always yell at me.
