Chapter Five
When Eve woke, she rolled over and looked at the clock. She only had an hour before Drake would arrive for their date. It didn’t give her much time, but her body felt unwilling to leave the comfort of bed.
She sat up and rubbed her eyes, trying to remember her day. There was the coffee shop, then she’d visited a few boutiques. Vaguely, she recalled coming home and seeing Lisa’s apartment. The rest remained a blur.
It was odd for her to take a nap in the middle of the day, especially in her clothes. In fact, she couldn’t remember going to bed at all. It was a little disturbing but considering the stress she’d been under, she was lucky she hadn’t started hallucinating all together.
Eve stumbled down the hall and into the kitchen. She took a bottle of water from the refrigerator and gulped it greedily. As she set the bottle on the counter, she noticed a bouquet of flowers wrapped in cellophane.
She touched the flowers, wondering briefly if she was still asleep and dreaming. The cellophane made a crinkling noise as she touched it and the flowers smelled sweet. They must have come from Drake but for the life of her, she had no idea when he’d left them.
Her head started hurting when she tried to remember. Instead of going crazy over it, she took a vase from the cupboard, unwrapped the flowers and put them in water. Maybe he’d brought the flowers last night and she’d overlooked them. It seemed plausible.
A shower would make her feel better. She went to the bathroom and started the water running. It took a few minutes to get hot, so she took off her clothes then searched the medicine cabinet for aspirin. There was a half a bottle. She took two then cupped her hand under the water faucet and swallowed the pills, hoping the pain eased off before Drake arrived.
Standing at the sink, she looked at the reflection, mimicking her actions. There seemed to be something different about her today. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but she looked strange. Upon closer examination, she noticed her brown hair looked a little darker and her skin a little paler. She’d had highlights put in months ago. They must’ve grown out without her realizing.
She slid into the shower and felt the hot water. It was nice, but she didn’t have time to linger. Drake was on his way and she didn’t want to make him wait. After so much grief over men, she’d finally found a nice guy.
After her shower, Eve wrapped a towel around herself and wiped the mirror free of fog. She kept the exhaust fan running but it always hazed up. Once she had a clear spot, she started putting on her make-up. She never wore much, just a little color around her eyes and tonight she’d add some lipstick. Plain Jane looked a little hotter today. Maybe she had a chance at pulling off sexy after all.
When Eve opened the bathroom door, she noticed something strange.
