âI really donât like this, Mercedes.â Santiâs jaw clenches as he glances around the space, searching for invisible threats. âIt would be better if you came back to the manor.â
I can see how difficult it is for him to make this request, rather than demanding it like heâs used to. So I offer him a small smile, trying my best to sound calm.
âIt will be okay. Georgie and Solana are going to stay with me. I canât let Vincent dictate how Iâm going to live my life. That was the whole point of me coming here. And clearly, The Tribunal has no plans to deal with him, so this situation isnât going away.â
Santi shakes his head in frustration at the observation. Heâs not happy with it, but itâs the truth.
âBesides, I have the guards,â I point out.
âAnd youâll have more,â he grits out. âIâm calling in two additional. Theyâll be here shortly.â
I bite back the urge to tell him thatâs overkill. As much as I really dislike having these random guys following me everywhere I go, I know itâs necessary. And, truth be told, it does make me feel safer.
âThank you, Santi.â
He lingers, his eyes moving to Georgie and Solana on the sofa, and then back to me. âAre you sure you donât want to come home?â
âThis is my home,â I croak even though thatâs not exactly true. Thereâs only one place that feels like home now, and it isnât here or the manor.
Santiago looks distraught by the idea, as if heâs only just now realizing that heâs losing me. When he sent me away, Iâm sure it was in his mind that Iâd be back eventually. But now things have changed permanently without any real time to accept it.
âI just want you to be safe,â he says.
âI will,â I assure him. âIâll be extra careful.â
âAnd youâll call me if you need anything,â he adds.
âOf course.â
He nods reluctantly. Then thereâs a knock on the door, and everybody tenses. Only, I know before Santi even moves who it is. There is only one person who can knock like that.
âSanti.â I capture my brotherâs arm, and he pauses to look at me. âTell him Iâm asleep.â
His brow furrows, but he nods, and I move around to hide behind the door when Santi cracks it open. Thereâs a moment of tense silence, and then Judgeâs acknowledgment of my brotherâs presence.
âSantiago.â
âJudge.â
More silence. Then a sigh.
âIs everything okay?â Judge grits out. âThe guards seem to be on high alert.â
âEverythingâs under control,â Santi answers vaguely.
I already know without looking at him that Judge wonât like this.
âWhere is she?â
âAsleep.â
âWhy are you here in the middle of the night?â Judge asks.
âWhy are you?â Santi replies.
I swallow, waiting for this to be over. The terrible part is, I want to see him. I want to open the door and invite him in and curl up in the shelter of his arms. More than anything, thatâs what I want. But Judge canât be my safety net anymore. I canât fall back into that trap.
