Chapter Ten

Seff wasn’t sure what woke him at first. Then a groan from Jinelle touched his awareness. He rolled over and noticed she was burning up. She groaned again and rolled to her side, bringing her legs up to her chest.

Jumping up out of bed, he picked up his comm and dialed Castien’s number. When the healer answered, Seff said, “She’d burning up and seems to be in pain.”

“Who? Jinelle?”

“Yeah.” Seff cursed, realizing how late it was. Castien was asleep. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do.”

“Bring her to the infirmary.”

“Okay, I’ll be there in a few.” Seff hung up, dressed, then gathered their things and threw them in the transporter, before gathering Jinelle up, wrapped in the blanket that was on the bed.

It didn’t take him long to get back to Wintervale. He stopped the transport outside the pack infirmary and rushed to Jinelle’s side. He was at the door when Turk, Harland, and Merric rushed up behind him. “What happened?”

Seff motioned to the door, Harland opened it. “I don’t know. I woke, and she was burning up.”

Castien was in the lobby, waving them to one of the rooms. “Sounds like a fever.”

Seff rushed into the room behind Castien and placed her on the bed. Jinelle was still asleep, moaning softly as if in pain. “What’s wrong with her?”

“I’ll know as soon as you move back and let me see her.” Castien glanced at the door and frowned. “You’re supposed to be in bed.”

Blake rolled her eyes, as she entered the room. She went to Jinelle and felt her head. “Damn, she’s hot.”

Castien placed a hand on Jinelle’s forehead. “This isn’t a cold, and I don’t sense an infection, which is weird.”

Merric moved closer to her, then sniffed the air. Leaning down with his nose to her hair, he sniffed again. “She’s been poisoned.”

“What?” they all said at the same time.

“Not with what killed our females, but with something.” Merric glanced at Castien. “You don’t smell it?”

Castien slowly lowered to smell Jinelle skin on the inside of her wrist. “Fuck. It’s different from the poison that Cedric made. This is sweeter and subtle. I would have missed it if Dad hadn’t scented it.”

Castien’s frown deepened, and Merric placed a hand on his shoulder. “I almost missed it too. I think the only reason I picked up on it was because she’s my mate, and it made her scent change a little.”

Why hadn’t Seff picked up on the scent change? Because he was too worried that her skin felt like she was being boiled alive. Reaching out he took her hand which wasn’t as hot as it was when he carried her in the exam room. Castien had cooled her body temperature down. A small amount of relief eased some of the tension. But not all.

Turk whirled on Seff, pushed him away from Jinelle, and snarled. “Who was she around? What did she eat? Touch?”

Seff curled his upper lip and stepped in Turk’s space. “She didn’t leave my side the whole time we were there.
